blade runner notes
Alan Turing
Code breaker and math genius of the 20th century
Helped break the code from the germans in WWII
Was discriminated against because he was gay
Put in jail and forced to undergo chemical castration
Created the first computer
Turing test
Can a computer answer questions and act like a computer
What is artificial intelligence
Computers that can solve problems faster than humans without natural intelligence
AI is impossible without data
Need to have pattern recognition
All data saved to a cloud so all robots would be capable of each task
Blade Runner
Imagining what the future of technology will be
Director - ridley scott
Very electronic music
When extremely realistic robots return to earth they are destroyed
Common theme in many of these movies - close up shots of a human eye
Shows the life that humans have that robots do not
Appears to take place somewhere in asia
Some technology seems rather old
Tvs, computers
Some is extremely advanced
Robots
Very futuristic city
High buildings
Modern architecture
Flying cars
Inside of some buildings looks old as well
Shows that while they believed robots would advance, the director may not have imagined how other parts of society would change
Robots are very human like
Human characteristics
Able to answer questions in a humane way
Cannot replicate emotions
Nice hairdos and makeup
Smoke cigarettes
All questions asked in the test deckard gives the robots are meant to elicit an emotional response to test if they are robotic
Rachael is able to trick deckard for over 100 questions
Shows how advanced the technology is becoming
“More human than human”
Motto for the robots
Robots are able to withstand any temperature and can handle toxic waste with their ‘bare hands’
Rachael is able to recall memories that were implanted in her
Seem to elicit an emotional response
J.F. has much less sophisticated robots that he created
He helps pris without knowing if she is a human or robot
Computer is able to scan image and allow deckard to enhance and move
Enhances much more than what was available at that time
Listens to verbal directions
Video chat technology seen
Not available during the time when this movie was created
Shows understanding and prediction of future technology
Robot is able to hide in crowd of people because of how hyper-realistic it looks
Rachael kills robot that was attacking Deckard
This shows at least some level of human like emotion
Rachael changes her hair to appear more feminine and potentially more attractive for Deckard
Shows that she can potentially feel romantic emotions as well
Creature with long nose
May be a reference to pinocchio
In certain lights the robots eyes glow orange
Small flaw that shows they are not human
J.F. Sebastian’s home is very eclectic, as though he has been collecting things for many years
“We’re no computers Sebastian, we’re human”
“I think therefore I am”
Both quotes said by robots
Very philosophical
Shows that they can think to the same level of spirituality as humans
Robot goes to a human to try to fix him so he can live longer
Shows that even robots have limitations and do not have all the answers
Robot appears to be in pain when killing, as though he feels badly about it
Again shows human emotion
Guilt and remorse
When Pris is shot she throws almost a tantrum
May be attempting to show the immaturity of the robots emotions
Roy is in distress when he sees Pris murdered
Robots can feel physical pain
Strange that they would have this disadvantage
Shows that by attempting to get the wide range of human emotions, they were programmed with the bad emotions as well such as pain and heartache
Roy is seen holding a white bird
Usually symbolize purity
“Quite an experience to live in fear isn't it? That’s what it is to be a slave.”
I think this quote shows how all of us are slaves in some way because we are all afraid of something
When Roy dies the white bird flies away
Shows an escape of purity and goodness
Many parts of this movie show how life is fleeting
“It's too bad she won't live. But then again who does?”
